Today’s worm was found via the HBIC who posted another song from this concert series.  Bigs up and a booby squeeze for that!  The song below was composed by the great Agustin Lara who was (and continues to be) one of Mexico’s greatest treasures.  I learned to play one of his songs on the piano for my mom and Mama Maria (grandma) who are both huge fans of his work.  This song, Farolito (Lighthouse) is my all time favorite Lara song and found me digging through my iPod for more of Lara’s music.  It also reminded me that I really miss my Mama Maria and listening to her hum Lara’s songs while she crocheted a new tablecloth or blanket.

The arrangement, courtesy of the conductor – the great Alondra de la Parra – is a sweet waltz made sweeter by Natalia LaFourcade’s delicate vocals.

This year Mexico celebrates 200 years of independence from Spain – I know, time really flies.  To celebrate, several major artists in the latin community contributed their take on traditional Mexican songs for Bi-Mexicano: Nuestros Clasicos Hechas Rock.  You may recognize some of these standards if you’ve ever hung out with the BumbleBee clan after 2am.  It’s not all Mexicans at this party with contributions from Senor Flavio of Arentina and Aterciopelados of Colombia.  Most interesting though is Spain’s very own Enrique Bunbury adding his take on “Vamonos.”  Bunbury has a HUGE following in Mexico (especially with the ladies for some reason) so I understand the addition of a Spaniard.  Natalia (swoooooon) Lafourcade’s version of “La Cigarilla” was released this week over at Remezcla and honestly I’m a little underwhelmed.   After several listens I found myself thinking that Denise Gutierrez (Lo Blondo of Hello Seahorse!) with operatic singing style and phrasing could have really elevated the restrained vocals on this track, but this just makes me excited to hear Hello Seahorse! with “Cielo Rojo.”  If you’re interested you can find the complete track list HERE.

Happy New Year!! Today’s ear worm was recorded this past summer during LAMC in New York. Makes me wish summer would hurry its ass up and get here because I’ve had enough of this stupid cold weather.

Natalia Lafourcade played the unfortunate Logan Square Auditorium last Friday to a small but enthusiastic crowd. The sound at the place is awful and she came on very late but those that stayed were rewarded with a fantastic – albeit too short – set.  She opened with my personal favorite “Amarte Duele” and below is the second song performed, coincidentally also the second single off her album “Hu Hu Hu.”  How cute is she?

Natalia Lafourcade has delivered one of the best albums of the year: Hu Hu Hu and quite frankly, to call it a masterpiece is not hyperbole on my part (for once).
