Lollapalooza Chile took place earlier this year and featured two bands that will be playing Lollapalooza Chicago this weekend: Los Bunkers and Chico Trujillo. It’s a welcome sight to see more latin-oh artists/bands featured at Lolla.

Los Bunkers craft sweet and catchy pop heavily influenced by early Beatles’ records (think Mersey beat). They’ll play the PlayStation stage Friday, August 5 at 1:45pm

Chico Trujillo (Chile’s most popular cumbia band) will have festival goers dancing to their unique blend of cumbia, ska and punk on Saturday August 6, 2011 at 1:30pm as they take over the PlayStation stage.

Day 20: A Song You Like By A Singer/Band You Really Don’t Like. – Coldplay: Green Eyes.

I have a love-hate-irrational rage-back-to-love relationship with Coldplay.  I liked their first couple albums a lot but they lost me after the release of XYViva La Vida had me excited for like 2 seconds because my lord and master Eno produced it, but sadly all of that excitement quickly faded after giving the album a few spins.  They’re going to release a new album later this year and the first single is all sorts of no me gusta and I won’t be seeing them at Lollapalooza this year.  Nonetheless, there’s something about Chris Martin’s voice that I find attractive and easy to digest; what can I say, I like to listen to the man sing especially on a Kanye record.  Below is my favorite Coldplay song and another one from the ol’ wedding reception playlist.

The Lolla line up is out* and I have mixed feelings about it. See, I’ve seen or plan to see in the coming weeks artists like: Damian “Jr Gong” Marley, Smith Westerns, Best Coast, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Cults, Titus Andronicus, Mayer Hawthorne & the County, Maps & Atlases, Tennis, Ximena Sarinana, Lia Ices, Pretty Lights, Jay Electronica and Daedulus. But I’m excited for Foo Fighters, Eminem, Lykke Li, The Kills, The Mountain Goats, Death From Above 1979, and Julie Easterling. Like I said – mixed response to the lineup.

But I bought my ticket early and look forward to this year’s fest because for me, Lolla is about attending with friends and checking out artists I might not be able to see due to the fest’s ridiculous exclusivity clause, sold out shows or other previously scheduled engagements. So while I might be annoyed that I’ve already seen a good number of artists on the lineup, I’m excited to see those whose shows I’ve missed and hanging out with my besties in what will probably be another insufferably hot August weekend. Once again, I’ll fill my backpack with Imodium, toilet paper, sunscreen, cameras and baby wipes and I’ll see you kids in line for the lobster corndogs at Graham Elliot’s food stand (scratch that – I’ll be FUPA huntin’ with The Naughty Librarian, La Blue Eyes and Wendy from KC. You’ve been put on notice).

*I won’t post the full line up because at this point why bother – it’s EVERYWHERE. Google that bitch if you really want to see all the names.

There’s a fantastic article posted today on the Reader’s website that asks the question: “Do festivals like Pitchfork and Lollapalooza have the right to restrict photography in a public park?” As someone who has attended festivals in this town for several years it’s frustrating and comical to see the zeal with which security at Pitchfork enforce the “no professional camera” (i.e. cameras with detachable lenses) code.  I recently purchased a new camera (Canon Powershot SD780 IS) and specifically sought out a small digital camera because it is small enough to hide should a venue have restrictions on photography and video. The photographs and video I post on this site don’t generate any kind of income for yours truly, I simply like to post pictures and video to share the experience with someone else and to document my life. That being said I understand a festival’s desire to control the content that gets out and a band’s desire to control the images and video that are released but isn’t it kind of a given that people will find ways around the rules and get their pictures and videos?  Anyway, read the article and join the debate.
