Oh hi there…it’s been a while since I last logged on and did something other than drool over Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Welp, North Coast Weekend is here or Labor Day Weekend if you’re old school and particular about these sorts of things. Below are a few artists worth seeing and if you’re not going to NCMF the why don’t you check back throughout the weekend to see the usual awful stage shots I am prone to taking and we can judge the kids’ and their crazy fashions together.

North Coast stole my heart last year and again with this year’s line up. The festival turns a big magnifying glass to the city’s local talent even dedicating an entire stage to up-and-coming local artists.

First up is the Chicago-based production team known as The Hood Internet who will bring their mash ups of hip hop with indie to the Red Bull Groove Stage on Friday at 4;30p. There a ton of tracks and several mixtapes available at their SoundCloud page and I’ve posted one below but do check it out and dig in.

Perfect Kiss the self described “new wave revivalists” hail from the Pilsen and Little Village neighborhoods so shouts out to my childhood stomping grounds. They hit all the right spots with their synth heavy pop that are perfect for a late summer evening. They’ll hit the Magic Hat Local Stage on Friday at 6:15p.

Midnight Conspiracy: Chicago’s own party starting duo will hit the Magic Hat Local Stage at 9 up against headliners David Guetta and Wiz Khalifa. Here’s the song that opened the flood gates:

Can’t stop smiling.

These kids are divine.

Day 1 was aces all around  Random thoughts from poorly scribbled notes.

The additional 10k people at the festival could be felt.  I did like the idea of having all the food on one boulevard away from the stages.  It made for less of a clusterfuck in the food area; unless you were in line waiting for a burger from Kuma’s the food lines moved quickly and easily.

Young the Giant’s Sameer Gadhita left a piece of his soul on the Bud Light Stage.   Los Bunkers, despite sound issues that plagued the Play Station stage all afternoon, were a delight with their 60′s pop soaked tunes.  They also can take credit for having one of the biggest crowd swells of the day.  I saw several kids walk by the Play Station stage on their way to the bar and they’d stop and join the crowd to dance to Los Bunkers.  Grace Potter & The Nocturnals brought their blues-rock to the Bud Light stage.  Despite the howling and Tina Turner-like dance moves, Potter seemed much more subdued than at last year’s North Coast Festival.  I caught the beginning and end of Les Butcherettes who were one of the most intense experiences I’ve had a festival ever.  Teri Gender Bender throws her raw fuck-all energy in your face and you can do nothing but stand in awe.  Gabe Serbian (drums) almost didn’t make it through their last song and at the end of their set puked on stage.  Rock ‘n-fucking-roll, kids.  I heard and saw a good chunk of Smith Westerns and they’ve remained the same: very polished performance, slowly coming through with band chemistry and audience banter.  The Kills were fierce; Allison Mosshart growled and Jamie Hince didn’t even break a sweat.  I wandered over to the south end of the park where the crowd was dense.  I sat for most of Two Door Cinema Club’s set and was surprised by just how big a crowd they drew and each person jumped and danced along.  A Perfect Circle was one of the few bands I was really excited to see and despite their reworked cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine” (which fell flat) the rest of their set was note perfect.  How you imagine a big power rock festival band to sound.   At this point things took a turn for the very weird.  I finally found The Naughty Librarian in one of the south baseball fields.  We caught the last half or so of Skrillex who turned Perry’s tent into a dance party, Afro Jack (whose set started late) continued the party.  Festivals are all about the people watching and at Perry’s I had a blast sitting and watching/observing/judging/laughing.  That’s where this video happened:

We stuck around for some of Girl Talk before heading home.  The weather was gorgeous, the heat wasn’t oppressive, the kids had a great time and a few made a mess of things – not a bad Day 1.  Here are a couple more pictures from yesterday but the full lot will be up on the Facebook Page.

Lollapalooza Chile took place earlier this year and featured two bands that will be playing Lollapalooza Chicago this weekend: Los Bunkers and Chico Trujillo. It’s a welcome sight to see more latin-oh artists/bands featured at Lolla.

Los Bunkers craft sweet and catchy pop heavily influenced by early Beatles’ records (think Mersey beat). They’ll play the PlayStation stage Friday, August 5 at 1:45pm

Chico Trujillo (Chile’s most popular cumbia band) will have festival goers dancing to their unique blend of cumbia, ska and punk on Saturday August 6, 2011 at 1:30pm as they take over the PlayStation stage.

Ceci Bastida started her musical career at the age of 15 bringing her balls-out-fuck-all attitude to the politically charged ska outfit Tijuana No! When the group disbanded it was expected she would launch a solo career, instead, she spent 8 years as a keyboardist for fellow Tijuana No! band mate Julieta Venegas. Recently, Bastida (now in her late 30s), began that career with “Veo La Marea”. “Veo” is a collection of high energy 80s inspired synth pop with some traditional regional flourishes and funk and reggae tinged songs. She’ll be performing at Lollapalooza on Friday, August 5, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the BMI stage. Later that night she’ll be performing at a special meet-and-greet in Wicker Park along with our friends [.DESCARGA.].

And for old time’s sake:

Sufjan Stevens stopped by the WNYC studios and this happened.  It is simply stunning.

DESCARGA.

Holy shit.

That is all I kept thinking when listening to [.DESCARGA.]‘s new EP The Things We Do (due August 9, 2011).  From the perspective of an outsider, it seemed as if the band spent the last year or so in a state of transition.  There were a couple of line up changes with the most notable being the addition of drummer Anthony Macias.  He has been the game changer for these veterans of the latin alternative community.  The Things We Do kicks off with The Funeral with Hex sounding like Eddie Vedder before he sold his soul for a ukulele.  The driving force of this song is Evil’s piercing guitar but for me it’s the pulsating floor toms and give the song a sobering weight.  Keeping true to form, the album is exactly half in English and half in Spanish with the song Tu Eres Yo (You Are Me) beginning that smooth transition between languages.  Esperando (Waiting) effectively uses a fuzzy guitar sound to give the song a sense of urgency and Nube Negra (Black Cloud) is the second song sung in Spanish that hits fast and hard.

[.DESCARGA.] is a band that has always paid tribute to those artists who have influenced them and this is never more clearly expressed than in the song Party Girl which invokes the ghost of Ian Curtis with haunting vocals repeating “Wake up party girl ’cause it’s time to go”.  If a drummer is the backbone of a band then the bass player is the stuff in between filling in the sound and keeping steady – this is best on display during Party Girl – big ups to J. Calvo.  The third and final Spanish song to appear on the EP is Dejame Saber (Let Me Know) with its grungy guitar and stinging lyrics, “yo no lo voy hacer pero lo intento / yo nunca lo voy hacer pero quisiera saber / como ser humano como tu” (google that ish) keeps the bat out of hell energy of this EP up.  Closing things out is the previously wormed Chemtrails, a rattlesnake of a song.

[.DESCARGA.] is currently boasting its most solid line up to date with Evil’s confident and powerful guitar to Calvo’s bass, so steady and strong.  Hex has never sounded more inspired lyrically and bringing it all together is Macias behind the drum kit.  They’ve got a confidence that comes from being comfortable around each other on and off stage; this is band that is firing on all cylinders.

You can preview the tracks Funeral and Dejame Saber below.

On a personal note, this post has been a work in progress since late last year not long after the release of the single, Chemtrails.  My plan had been to start writing and then fill in the blanks once new music was released.  I even spent some time with the boys at their rehearsal space where the conversation took some interesting turns.  (All I can say is life on the road with a van full of boys is never dull.)  The band had just added Macias at drums and not long after our meeting the band lost a member.  There was a strong sense of wanting to move forward, to start the dirty work that is writing, rehearsing and recording.  This EP is very much the product of a band that in a sense had to start over, had to rededicate themselves to their craft and had to work and give these songs time to “cook”.  To all four members of [.DESCARGA.] I say: you fuckers were worth the wait.  Now don’t make me wait another 8-9 months for the next one.

Besitos to my friend, Ian (The Boy With The Broken Heart) for bringing this track into my life.  It feels so good on a cloudy Wednesday morning.
