just another day

happy people pass my way

looking in their eyes I see a mem’ry

I never realized how happy you made me…

Today is an important day in music history. Today we celebrate the birth of one Barry Alan Pincus from Brooklyn, New York.  A singer-songwriter, musician, arranger, producer, conducter, entertainer and American Idol mentor beloved and known around the world as Mr. Barry Manilow.

Super hot picture, right? When I was a really little MeanLittleBumbleBee, in the early days of my fag haggery Barry was my friend. As a young’un I bought a greatest hits tape after hearing Copacabana and so mylife long love affair of all things Manilow began.

Music and passion are always in fashion…

I wanted to be Lola with yellow feathers in my hair and a dress cut down to there, watching Tony at the bar then meeting Rico who wore a diamond.  Havana sounded boss. And then I learned that:

You know I can’t smile without you
I can’t smile without you
I can’t laugh and I can’t sing
I’m finding it hard to do anything
You see I feel sad when you’re sad
I feel glad when you’re glad
If you only knew what I’m going through
I just can’t smile without you

Sigh…

Here’s Barry putting his foot in it during an encore of Copacabana:

And because I’ve always wondered if Mandy is really indeed for his cat:

Happy Birthday Barry Manilow!!!!

  1. Barry Manilow didn’t even write Mandy; it was written by Richard Kerr and Scott English and Scott had a minor hit with Mandy in the UK as an uptempo pop song a few years before Clive Davis found it for Barry. Early one morning, a reporter who had tracked Scott down called him and asked Scott who Mandy was, to which Scott replied, “my dog but I sent her away. Now you go away.” and banged the phone down before going back to sleep. So now you know, Mandy isn’t about a cat or dog much less Barry’s cat or dog. By the way, Barry was once asked during an interview in Japan if he liked cats and his answer was no so I doubt he’s ever owned one. Right now he owns two labrador retrievers but I don’t know their names.
