If you’ve seen the above logo on a flyer or on a banner at a show you know you’re in good hands.
Las Divas Promotions consists of 5 beautiful Latinas: Yvonne Nieves, Miriam Arevalo-Serrano, Maureen Arevalo, Marisel Melendez, Sandra Posadas and Elizabeth Rodriguez. Las Divas formed in April 2008 and give the Latino music and business communities the exposure needed to reach broader audiences. I was fortunate enough to catch Yvonne and Miriam for a quick chat after an E>N>E: Chicago Rocks taping of which they are very proud sponsors.
Seeing the need to get talented, hard-working bands the respect they deserve, Las Divas work, promote and scout bands and also link bands to promotional media companies like E>N>E. They help bands in Chicago and the suburbs get organized with bios, bookings, marketing strategies and serve as a pipeline between bands and the general public. They love the music community and have a passion for promoting new talent through showcases and networking events in the area. Breaking down barriers in what has long been considered the boys club these ladies show that with heart and hard work anything is possible. But don’t think them just limited to music. Oh no. Have you checked out The Brown Girls Chronicles? Featuring several of Las Divas, the Brown Girls Chronicles are stories of second generation Puerto Rican women talking about their struggles for independence and survival in their day to day lives. Three encore performances have been added for the end of this month and promptly sold out. Here’s hoping they’ll be back for more shows soon.
Aside from being a fabulous Diva, Yvonne also manages the metal band Memoria. Miriam is currently working on expanding Las Divas Promotions by setting up a base in Houston Texas. Connecting with local Houston bands and promoters to bring bands to Chicago and send local bands to Houston. Its just another way Las Divas will get the word out.
Las Divas Promotions is also very heavily involved in community work. For example, they are on their second year working with Pilsen Neighbors Community Council and Fiesta del Sol. They are not only focused on working with the Latino community, but have made it a point to bridge divides through their work – working with an ethnically and racially diverse group of people. They’ve hosted events with Collective Quest Entertainment, an all male, black-owned production group and with Metal Mergence, an umbrella for heavy metal groups that provide a slew of resources to local, national and international bands.
So next time you’re out and you see Las Divas Promotions’ logo, seek them out and say hi. They’re great ladies to have in your corner.
